Service Description

I have over 25 years experience as a piano teacher and was trained at the Royal College of Music where I gained several prizes, including student of the year. I also worked as a Head of Music in a variety of schools for over twenty years. Although I was trained as a concert pianist I am also a practising jazz musician and can play in any style - boogie, gospel, rock, pop - these all feature in my lessons! I am very interested in the way people learn and have developed new techniques of teaching. Basically I concentrate on the physical side of playing to start with - developing a good ear and technique. Note reading is developed a little later. As a result of this approach my students seem to make rapid progress - many are already at A-level standard by about 12 years old, for example. Two of my students recently won the titles of Junior Pianist of the Year and Pianist of the Year at the Bournemouth Music Festival 2007. I have also applied my unique approach to the teaching of singing (X-Factor!), clarinet and electronic keyboards. I also offer theory lessons to all levels, GCSE music guidance (I am a principal examiner for a major board) and I tutor A-level, degree and post graduate students in all aspects of the subject. The emphasis in my lessons is on motivation. I guess I am trying to instil in my students the same passion that I feel for all sorts of music. I teach 5 year- olds to adults at present, from beginners to professionals. I also specialise in helping those of you traumatised by your youthful experiences of piano lessons! I offer something quite different to that!
